Summer Homework

All students entering first through eighth grades in the fall are required to participate in our Summer Math and Reading Program. These assignments help students maintain academic growth and are designed to prepare them for a strong start to the upcoming school year. Parents can facilitate the process by establishing a schedule for the summer that combines summer work with other activities to help focus your child. Specific requirements are outlined in the grade-level letters linked below.

Optional Summer Enrichment
In addition to the required work, we encourage families to explore our optional summer enrichment opportunities:
- Math Fact Practice: Students entering third through fifth grades can sharpen their math fluency with Reflex (incoming third through fifth grade students) and Frax (incoming fourth and fifth grade students), engaging online programs that support fact recall and foundational skills. Parents can sign up for a free Parent Account to monitor progress—details are included in the Reflex Parent Summer Letter and Frax Parent Summer Letter. Contact your child’s homeroom teacher for specifics.
- IXL Summer Support: Students in first through eighth grades can continue personalized learning through IXL, which offers skill plans aligned to spring MAP testing data, Summer Boost Plans, bingo boards, and skill tracking worksheets. Visit ixl.com/resources/summer for more information and contact Olivia Keffer at oliviakeffer@smeds.com or your child’s homeroom teacher for login information and tech support with IXL.
- Typing Practice: Building typing fluency is a valuable summer goal! Students can improve their keyboarding skills with free platforms such as typing.com or typingclub.com.
- Sacramento Public Library Summer Reading Challenge: Join the community-wide reading celebration through the Sacramento Public Library's Summer Reading Challenge. Students can track their reading, earn prizes, and discover great books and events all summer long.
We hope students and families take advantage of these optional resources to stay engaged, challenged, and inspired all summer long.
