Middle School



Curriculum Overview
Our goal is to foster an education which seeks, not only to develop each student academically, but more importantly to prepare each student to live a creative, humane and compassionate life, and to be a contributing member of society.  Toward this end, we emphasize a classical approach to learning while being responsive to all the research on "how students learn." In Middle School the emphasis is on preparing our students for high school and beyond.  The following course of study is provided:

Writing Workshop, Grammar, and Literature
Students master appropriate grammar and writing skills which are critical to success. These skills are further enhanced through the different genres in literature through reading the classics and other outstanding literary works.

General Mathematics, Pre-Algebra and Algebra I
The study of general mathematics, Pre-Algebra and Algebra emphasize the fundamental operations with a variety of opportunities to apply these concepts in problem solving and critical thinking. Completion of Algebra I is provided for students who demonstrate the necessary skill to handle this advanced subject.

Science 
The study of science encourages a clear understanding of the scientific process and how to go about finding an answer to a problem.

History
Historical facts, great personalities of the ages, religion, art, music, geography, simple economics, and scientific and agricultural advancements are included in all history courses. Civics and United States History are taught at the eighth grade level.

Foreign Language
In Middle School students take both Spanish and Latin. In Spanish proper pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, literature, songs, and conversation are stressed at all grade levels. The program provides capable students with the skills to move into Spanish II in high school. The study of Latin begins in grade six to assist with further development of vocabulary and grammar skills, grammar, and translations, along with an appreciation for the classical world, are included.

Fine Arts
Art, Music, and Drama extend the student's creative expression. Songs, plays, and art relating to literature, history, and religion are explored in a number of different media. Middle School students put on the Shakespeare Festival in the spring, providing an opportunity to share a part of their academic program with the entire school community.

Religion
The study of religion reinforces the religious commitment of the school and gives the student an historical perspective in the part that religion has paid in the development of Western civilization. Emphasis on the Old and New Testament is a part of the curriculum.

Computer Education  
Computer Education gives students knowledge in the use of the technology as a tool to assist them in their studies, especially in researching topics, completing reports and writing assignments.

Physical Education
A rigorous athletics program coexists with the academics. Daily physical education classes, noncompetitive games, and competitive sports are part of the physical education and after school sports program.
