Topic 4 Math
- array: shows equal rows of objects, the way to show a multiplication problem with a picture
- Commutative Property of Multiplication: you can multiply numbers in any order and the product is the same. Change the order of the factors, and the product stays the same!
- factors: the numbers that are multiplied together
- multiplication: a quick way to add the same quantity many times
- product: the answer to a multiplication number sentence.

Our Language Art program consists of reading comprehension, writing, speaking and listening. The ImagineIt! program forms the foundation. Our third grade math program is based on the new California Common Core math standards. Our new math program this year is the Common Core edition of Envision Math. Please see the introductory video on the Overview page for an overview of this exciting and engaging program. As the year progresses, every effort is made to address the needs for extra support and/or enrichment for our third grade students. The goal of Speed Math Deluxe is to create an equation, as quickly aspossible, from the four digits the computer gives you, using addition,subtraction, multiplication, and division.

This year in Social Studies, we will learn all about communities. We will learn about our own communities we belong to and what makes up a community. We will also learn about communities long ago, most specifically the Native American tribes of California. We will spend time learning about where these communities lived and how they interacted with other tribes. We will learn about how these Native American tribes live in our current society as well.
We will also be tying in geography to most everything we do. This year, students will be responsible for ‘Good Morning Geography.’ Each week a student will be chosen on Friday to prepare this short presentation over the weekend. The student will become an expert on any country of their choice. They can choose a country they have visited, want to visit, where their family originally came from or maybe one they are interested in. They will name the country, find where it is on a map of the world, name the continent it is located on, identify the language they speak in this country and how they say ‘Good Morning.’ They will also find out two fun facts about this country. When they come to school on Monday, they will be ready to teach their classmates what they have learned and show where the country is located on a map on the Promethean board. I am excited to travel around the world with the class!
In science this year, third grade students will be participating in a program called Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Launch. The goal of this program is to engage young minds in science, technology, engineering, and math so that they will build confidence, explore interests, and set themselves up for success in middle school, high school, and beyond. PLTW Launch taps into the students’ natural curiosity and enthusiasm to empower them to become problem solvers. Students use structured approaches, like the engineering design process, and employ critical thinking. They apply STEM knowledge, skills, and habits of mind, while learning that it is okay to take risks and make mistakes. As teachers and students learn and discover together, education becomes far more exciting.
The curriculum is broken into modules that explore engineering, biomedical sciences, and computer programming. During the first part of the year, students in third grade will be working through a module called “Stability and Motion: Forces and Interactions.” In this module, students explore simple machines such as wheel and axles, levers, the inclined plane, and more. They investigate the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. The design problem challenges students to to rescue a trapped tiger. Students then apply their knowledge of forces and devise a way to rescue a heavy zoo animal while keeping it safe throughout the process.

This year third graders will review and explore many of the features within Google Drive as they produce original documents (Google Docs), slideshows (Google Slides), drawings (Google Drawing), and surveys (Google Forms). They will also use Code.org to accomplish various block coding tasks. Another area of focus will be touch typing, with a sliding scale determining the number of minutes of typing a student will have for homework. The typing log will need to be signed and returned every week.
PE with Mr. Buzzard
In Physical Education, we have the opportunity to meet four times a week (30 minute classes). This year, Mr. Buzzard is going to present a different format. It’s going to be all about games. Each week, a game will be presented to the class. They will learn the rules on Mondayand play the game Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Each day there will be variations of the game presented as well as discussions. These discussions will be centered around values within a game including: teamwork, sportsmanship, honesty, integrity, kindness, leadership, etc. The class is divided into four teams with new leaders each week. We focus on our routine which includes running outside and cardio work inside. And, of course, we have a lot of fun.
Spanish with Mrs. Kearns
The Third Grade Class will meet for Spanish on Mondays and Wednesdays right after their first recess in the morning. We’ll begin the school year studying greetings, and courtesy expressions while practicing short conversations with our classmates in Spanish. The students will interview a classmate and write a description of their classmate with their portrait. In the fall months we’ll study Spanish Heritage Month by studying Spanish artists including Carmen Lomas Garza, We’ll make papel picado banners , and luminaries to celebrate the holiday season. During the winter months we’ll study foods, the calendar, our families traditions, and the changing weather conditions. In the spring season we’ll study clothing, our pets, parts of the body and celebrate Cinco de Mayo. We’ll end the school year describing our favorite summer sport and vacation.
Third graders go to the library every Monday afternoon for a thematic storytime, an introduction to engaging books, library skills, and checking out books. Stories for storytime are selected to support the unit themes of Imagine It, social studies, holidays, and other curriculum themes. Visit the St. Michael’s Library Website at
